Asian Waterbird Census: Nearly 22,000 Birds Spotted In Odisha’s Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary

Bhubaneswar, 11.01.2021(sandhan news):- Nearly 22,000 birds have been spotted during the winter this year at Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary located on outskirts of Bhubaneswar, revealed a census report on Saturday. As per the Asian Waterbird census 2021 report, a total of 21,948 birds has been counted, of which 62 species are wetland birds, 17 species are wetland dependant birds and 27 species are migratory birds. Many kinds of bird species were spotted at the wildlife sanctuary. The bird species included northern pintail, tufted duck, gadwall, red-crested pochard, river lapwing, grey headed lapwing, black bellied tern, river tern, great thick-knee, darter, gargarney, pacific golden plover, spot billed duck, pied harrier, eurasian wigeon, northern shoveler, common teal, black tailed godwit, black headed ibis and spotted red shank. Moreover, 652 additional terrestrial birds of 48 species were also found at the sanctuary. The Asian Waterbird Census 2021 was conducted at Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary on January 9, 2021 covering 27 sites. Total 12 teams comprising Honorary Wildlife Wardens, forest officials, research fellows of CDA and Nandankanan, students of Utkal University, Centurion University, SOA University, Central University of Orissa, North Orissa University, Odisha Bio-diversity Board, RMNH & OUAT, NGOs and volunteers were engaged at the bird counting programme.
