Rourkela : (Sandhan News/Subodha Nayak) : The Energy Management Department(EMD) collective of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has carried out several modifications in Blast Furnace gas grid that have not only brought about substantial savings for the company but have also led to substantial savings and enhanced efficiency of the systems.

It may be noted that the old Blast Furnace grid is connected to main shops like BF-1 & 4, CPP-1, Coke Oven Batteries # 1 to 5 and Blast Furnace Gas Holder. This grid operates at a pressure of about 400 millimetres water column (mmwc). There is another Blast Furnace grid called modernisation BFG grid which is connecting shops like BF#5, PBS, and Coke Oven Battery #6.  By design, this grid operates at higher pressure of about 600 mmwc or above. Because of the old grid, BF#1 was not able to meet the requirement of BF gas of old coke oven batteries. Besides frequent opening of flare stack in BF#5 was leading to pressure drop in gas flows to Coke Ovens Battery #6.

After a series of brain storming sessions, it was planned to supply BF gas to Battery#6 from BF #1&4 (old Blast Furnace grid).  Accordingly a series of modifications were carried out with completely in-house resources with the help of Blast Furnace, Coke Ovens, Instrumentation, Civil Engineering (Services) and Field Machinery (Maintenance) departments. The job was completed on 24th July 2020.

Because of the modifications the Blast Furnace gas availability for Power and Blowing Station has increased from 160000Nm3/hour to 215000 Nm3/hour. This has led to increase in power generation at PBS from about 8 Mega Watt to 24 Mega Watt.

Besides, the coal consumption in HP Boiler of CPP-1 is expected to reduce by 3000-4000 tonnes per month as compared to 2019-20.

Mr. Dipak Chattaraj, CEO, RSP has congratulated the EMD collective as well as the associated units for the commendable job. Calling upon the collective to make consolidated efforts have to reduce specific energy consumption to less than 6 Mega Watt per tonne of Crude Steel, he has said that this would enhance the overall efficiency of RSP to a significant extent.
